2012 Range Rover Evoque Off-Road First Drive Review

The 2012 Range Rover Evoque is a concept car that you can buy. Sure you can take it on the road, but is it off-road worthy, and can it take on the tough stuff that is the trademark of the Range Rover brand?

The Range Rover Evoque has added more awards to its portfolio

The Range Rover Evoque has added more awards to its portfolio, taking the total to 53 since its recent launch in September this year.
Recent honours bestowed on the Evoque came from Britain’s 4×4 Magazine, which proclaimed the Evoque its 4×4 of the Year, and this was swiftly followed by the Car of the Year title from the Czech Republic, and Best SUV from the Brazilian automotive news agency Auto Press, taking to 15 the number of different countries to recognise the smallest, lightest and most efficient Range Rover ever produced.

Range Rover Owners Club

Evoque’s half-century tally includes notable titles such as Car of the Year in the UK AutoExpress New Car Honours, Scottish Car of the Year, US Motor Trend’s SUV of the Year, BBC Top Gear’s Car of the Year, Car and Driver Spain Car of the Year, the Design Trophy from l’Automobile in France and a host of honours from Chinese organisations and publications.
For Land Rover global brand director John Edwards, keeping up with the awards is proving a welcome headache: “The speed with which the honours are being collected by the Evoque is breathtaking, as is their global nature. It is a fantastic achievement for all connected with the Evoque project and a great endorsement for the product.
“In addition to these formal titles, the Evoque is daily emerging on top in motoring magazine group tests around the globe, and is winning thousands of admiring new owners. We have now received in excess of 40,000 orders for Evoque, and what is particularly heartening is that many of those have come from customers new to the brand.”
The most recent British honour comes from 4×4 Magazine, whose editor Nigel Fryatt said that there was universal agreement among the judges “that the new Evoque points the way to what future 4x4s will be like, and in some respects that alone makes it a worthy winner.” 4×4 Magazine also awarded Evoque top honours in its Premium Plus class.

Range Rover Evoque was named the overwhelming victor of the Scottish Car of the Year 2011

This weekend Land Rover’s new Range Rover Evoque was named the overwhelming victor of the Scottish Car of the Year awards by the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers, as well as Best Compact SUV.
Announcing the Evoque’s triumph, Jim Murdoch, president of the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers, described the new Land Rover as a “wholly deserving” winner of the Scottish Car of the Year title.

“Built in Britain and with an iconic badge on its bonnet, our top car of 2011 has wowed everyone who’s driven it,” he added. “With more votes than any previous winner, this car is a runaway success. No surprise then that it already has a queue of buyers stretching round the block and beyond. We’re very proud to be among the first to acknowledge the brilliant work that has gone into building this car, especially as it’s so ideally suited to Scotland’s unique driving conditions.

“As two tough winters have shown, the need for capable 4x4s is still as strong as ever in Scotland. When the snow isn’t falling, we also demand a car that works just as well for family and business needs. And as if we’re not already asking for everything in one car, we also want excellent economy and affordable running costs. Our winner achieves all of this and also manages to be one of the most desirable cars money can buy.”

Land Rover is no stranger to success in the Scottish Car of the Year awards: the Discovery 4 was voted top of the Scots in 2009.

Murray Dietsch, Land Rover’s director of engineering programmes, received the Evoque’s award. “Scottish Car of the Year is undoubtedly one of the most important accolades in the industry,” he said. “On behalf of everyone at Land Rover, I would like to thank the association for the award and for recognising that the Evoque is the most exciting car to be driven on Scottish roads this year.”

His views were echoed by Phil Hodgkinson, product development director: “We are all very proud. The Evoque is the result of a real team effort, with all functions across the company working together to create a unique, exciting and altogether outstanding new vehicle.”

The prize comes hot on the heels of the Evoque’s success in the Auto Express New Car Awards, in which it was declared the magazine’s Car of the Year and Best Compact SUV.
Land Rover’s sister brand Jaguar were also winners at this year’s awards, picking up the prize for Best Sports car for their XKR-S model, Best Diesel for the XF and Jaguar’s famous E-type was awarded Most Iconic Vehicle of the last 50 years.

With a choice of three engines, two body styles, three design themes and a wide range of options and accessories, the new Range Rover Evoque offers customers significant choice across a range of price points; the range starts at £27,955. Offered in both 5-door and Coupé forms, the Evoque made its UK showroom debut in September, backed by 20,000 worldwide advance orders, 6000 of those from British buyers.

RANGE ROVER UNVEILS POP-UP STREET INSTALLATIONS

Range Rover has today unveiled four pop-up temporary street installations at key Parisian landmarks. The brand has worked with leading contemporary Parisian artists to create artworks which have been inspired by the new Range Rover Evoque and the city of Paris.

The installations focus on luxury, design, sustainability and technology and represent key aspects of the car. Each will be unveiled at the start of Paris Fashion Week and have been created by artists André (AKA Monsieur A), JCDC, Surface To Air and Yorgo Touplas. Each of the chosen artists has long been influenced by their city, Paris, but today they each reveal how this relationship has led to a three-day street pop-up with Range Rover.

Artist JCDC says of his installation: “My representation of luxury references grace, intimacy and protection. This is a concept frequently related to my work with bespoke and couture fashion. Similar to luxury clothing, this installation reflects a graceful protection.”

The pop-up street installations have been built around a wire frame replica of the Range Rover Evoque and will be positioned at iconic locations, including the Pompidou Centre and the Palais de Tokyo. They will be in situ from September 28th – September 30th 2010 and open to the public to view.

Land Rover design director, Gerry McGovern, said: “The Range Rover Evoque has been designed with a creative and urban audience in mind. Like a true Range Rover, the Evoque delivers the all-weather, all-surface capability which is a hallmark of the brand. Paris is the first city to see the car and we wanted to mark its arrival with a series of unique installations that epitomise the cars’ city spirit.”

The Range Rover Evoque will be officially unveiled at the Paris Motor Show on September 30 2010. The all-new coupe is the smallest, lightest and most fuel-efficient Range Rover ever. It will be a truly global car and will be sold in over 160 markets from summer 2011.

ALL-NEW RANGE ROVER EVOQUE PROTOTYPES GO UNDERCOVER

The all-new Range Rover Evoque has entered its final phase of testing, with hundreds of prototype models dispatched around the globe for trial in the toughest climates and conditions.

Land Rover is making no secret of the operation – its design team has fitted ten prototypes with funky camouflage wraps, to introduce the new car in ten key cities worldwide.

Ordinarily prototypes are disguised for discretion, but these ten are intended to be seen. The funky camouflage imagery is actually a GPS mapping trail of ten key cities for Evoque, with each vehicle saying ‘Hello’ to its city. It signals the eagerly awaited global launch of the new Evoque.

These unmissable vehicles represent London, New York, Sao Paulo, Paris, Milan, Madrid, Berlin, Sydney, Shanghai and Moscow and will all be spotted testing around the globe. They are just a small proportion of the hundreds of pre-production cars that will be rigorously evaluated over millions of miles to ensure the new Range Rover Evoque surpasses the highest standards of quality and reliability when it goes on sale in summer 2011.

Teams of engineers will travel to 20 countries to pit the Range Rover Evoque against the most extreme conditions on earth, ranging from the Arctic to the desert, from German Autobahns to Tokyo city traffic. Alongside the engineers, Land Rover is working with 120 unique component suppliers and carrying out in excess of 17,000 individual tests to examine every separate part and system.

Like all Range Rovers, the new Evoque will have been proven against all the elements when it goes on sale next summer.

“The development stage is crucial in the year leading up to launching the car,” said Murray Dietsch, director of Land Rover programmes. “No stone is left unturned; we have a team of experienced and skilled engineers who will work to a tight schedule to ensure we have a top quality vehicle to offer our customers.”

The new Range Rover Evoque is the smallest, lightest and most fuel-efficient model the company has ever offered, and will be sold in 160 markets around the world.

NEW RANGE ROVER EVOQUE DOMINATES THE WEB

The new Range Rover Evoque has made a big impression online since the car was officially unveiled at Kensington Palace last Thursday.

The launch party was broadcast live on the Land Rover Facebook page, and the video was streamed to a further 110 big-name automotive and lifestyle websites. Combined global viewers had exceeded 700,000 when measured the morning after the event, and over the weekend tens of thousands more watched on-demand. The number of launch party viewers worldwide has now passed 1.8 million.

Video highlights, interviews and excerpts from the launch were also published on Land Rover’s official YouTube channel. On Friday this became the most viewed YouTube channel in the UK and remains the second most viewed channel on YouTube this week. It generated a further 65,000 combined views of the Range Rover Evoque launch party.

This incredible online audience witnessed George Lamb, Land Rover managing director Phil Popham, Victoria Beckham and Land Rover’s design director Gerry McGovern unveil the new Range Rover Evoque, which will be the most compact and efficient car the company has ever produced when it goes on sale next year.

On Twitter, ‘Range Rover’ was one of the top ten most tweeted terms in Britain on the night of the launch and, during this period, around 6400 wall posts, comments, or ‘likes’ were added to the Land Rover Facebook page. Meanwhile, Google returned over 400 articles from established news networks, and in excess of 7000 blogs.

“We’re delighted we were able to bring the Range Rover Evoque preview party to such a large online audience” said Phil Popham, Land Rover managing director. “It’s vital that we reach the right audience online, and this was a breakthrough way to reveal a breakthrough car. The statistics show the enormous interest there is in the new Evoque and Range Rover as a brand.”

Land Rover has now received more than 10,000 expressions of interest in the new Range Rover Evoque, both online and in dealerships – a quarter of which have been made in the last week. In addition a new micro site has been launched containing further details and updates on the new car

ICONIC RANGE ROVER TURNS 40

The Range Rover will celebrate its 40th birthday on 17 June, 2010. One of the most significant vehicles in the history of motoring, the Range Rover was the world’s first vehicle as good on-road as off-road. It was the first fully capable luxury 4×4 and was a milestone in the development of the SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle).

“Land Rover has a unique history of product innovation. But the Range Rover probably remains the most historically significant vehicle we have ever launched. It is one of the most important vehicles in the history of motoring.” Phil Popham, Land Rover Managing Director.
